a monthly community ritual
"grief is not a problem to be solved, it is a presence awaiting witnessing."
-Francis Weller
the grieving process doesn't only happen when someone dies.there's the kind of loss that is earth-shattering, and there's the kind that's quiet and invisible to most. sometimes we don't even know its name is Grief.there is nothing to fix, solve, or force ourselves to release. grief is a sacred and transformative process that is best done in community with compassion and care.this is a place to welcome the most tender parts of us to come up from the depths and to stop carrying it alone, even for a moment. you'll have space to give your grief a voice and to move with it rather than against it.with gentle practice, we can learn to walk alongside our grief. to tend to it.to compost our losses into fertile soil.
why grief, why now?
because we are all feeling it, whether we acknowledge it or not!I know most of us have scrolled past tragedy after tragedy on our phones and felt that pit in your stomach for all the pain in the world. I know we have lost friends and lovers that meant the world to us. I know we live through the deaths of family members we felt we could never live without. I know we go through unimaginable changes and life transitions that shake our entire foundation and who we thought we were.long ago... there was a place for this.
we danced. we sang. we wailed. we were held and nourished by our families as we went through these changes.somewhere along the way, we lost the art of grieving in community.
we're here to bring it back.why?because grief is the doula that ushers us from one stage of life into the next. without it, parts of our energy and life force get stuck and frozen in time. we cannot skip over or rush past this process to receive all the beauty, vitality, levity and nourishment that come throughout.I know it can be difficult, and I know it can be heavy. too heavy to carry alone. that's why we are doing this in a communal space; for the shared knowing that we are in it together.with care and support, grief work is life giving.
"grief is not the hurt,
grief is the healing."

about the facilitator:

hi, I'm Zia!I'm a certified grief doula through International Doula Life Movement, a 200hr-certified yoga teacher, and an embodied facilitator trained with Dallas Movement Collective. I'm also a mother, artist, performer, queer person, clown, and many other things!Grief has moved through my body and my life for as long as I've lived, and I've always been tapped into the deep well of collective and ancestral grief. I've gotten lost there before, but through song, movement, and ritual theatre, I've discovered so much reverence, gratitude and playfulness in my life.I see a huge lack of grieving spaces in the world, so this is one step forward into a future of emotional freedom. I believe grief support is truly life changing.
please note: this is a community event held with care, not a professional therapy group or crisis intervention space.
